The Illinois State Police District 13 in DuQuoin said Tuesday morning that troopers had been dispatched to more than 100 disabled vehicle calls and several traffic accidents because of the weather over the past 24 hours.

State police say winter conditions were the root cause for the 122 motorist assist calls and 38 accidents since midnight on Monday.

Illinois State Police in Districts 12 and 13 issued a tow ban on Monday afternoon as the winter storm raged on.

Illinois State Police District 13 urged motorists to avoid travel if possible until conditions improve.

“As we are out here doing our best to protect you, please do your part to protect us! Avoid travel if possible,” the state police said. “If you must travel slow down, use caution, and allow extra time to make it safely to your destination. Move over for stopped vehicles and give emergency workers plenty of room. Let’s all do our part to have a safe day!”

Another accident was reported on Tuesday morning, where at least 10 vehicles were blocking all of the lanes in southbound Interstate 57 at milepost 103, about 8 miles north of Mt. Vernon.

More details about that accident will be released as it becomes available.
