Good defensive plays kept the game scoreless but the Hornettes could not hold off a Freeburg rally and they lost the sectional championship at home Thursday, 4-1.
Both sides allowed few base runners throughout much of the game, as bats were kept quiet. Several Nashville players dove for several balls, including a spectacular grab from Colleen Jahnke.
Freeburg scored one run in the fourth and three more came in at the top of the seventh, courtesy of a home run blast from Nicole Edmiaston.
Josie Woodrome had a single in the first. Nashville’s only run came in the bottom of the seventh when senior Whitley Hunter slammed a lead-off home run. Jill Kuhl followed a few bats later with a double but the last ditch effort to keep the season alive with a runner on third fell short.
The Hornettes finished the season 23-4 and were second in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi conference.
