The Nashville Hornettes volleyball team stayed impressive during the first week of play, knocking off two opponents and taking home the top prize from the conference preview tournament.
Nashville (6-0) opened its season against Wesclin, winning in two matches (25-15, 25-13). Senior Hazel Konkel had 9 kills in the game, while senior Kirsten Twenhafel and 7 junior Reese Valerie had 6. Senior Emily Schnitker and Junior Valerie Combs each had an ace.
The first home game was against county rival Okawville. Varel had 7 kills while Konkel added 6. Schnitker tallied 14 service points during the game.
The Hornettes capped off its weekend with the SIRR Preview Volleyball tournament in Carterville. The all-day, nine-hour volleyball series split 11 teams into three pools. Nashville exited its pool play wit a 2-0 record, defeating Benton (25-9, 25-11, 25-18) and Massac County (25-14, 25-23, 25-13) in three sets.
The morning qualified the Hornettes to advance. Nashville took on host Carterville that ended its series with a 3-0 record, and the team would remain victorious, shining over the Lions (25-13, 26-24).
The championship game against rival Pinckneyville went on to three sets but once the Hornettes took advantage of a 9-1 lead and never looked back. Hazel Konkel had a total of 11 kills.
Coach Josh Konkel told The Southern: “We showed that the Mississippi side of the River-to-River this year is going to be a dog fight every single night.”
