A man and a woman, both from Grafton, were killed in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County.
According to the Illinois State Police, preliminary investigation results indicate that a 2019 white Peterbilt truck-tractor driven by Nodell D. Graves, 31, of Maddison, WI, was stopped at the right shoulder of Interstate 57 northbound lane at the 84 milepost at 2:32 p.m. when a 2017 white General Motors Sierra reportedly struck the rear of the semi.
Graves was uninjured in the accident. The driver of the Sierra — a 73-year-old male — was pronounced dead on the scene. A 70-year-old female was transported by ambulance to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased later, according to police. Identification is pending based on next of kin notification.
Interstate traffic was diverted at exit 77 for about one hour and 30 minutes for the investigation, which is ongoing.
